NAVER LABS AHEAD demonstration in a real urban environment

AHEAD is a 3D AR HUD (head-up display) developed by NAVER LABS. It is an HUD unlike any other, displaying information such as automotive navigation, forward collision warning (FCW) and lane departure warning (LDW) on the windshield optically and seamlessly.

Existing HUDs can disrupt drivers’ concentration as the principal focus of what is displayed and what actually appears on the road differ. When focusing on the HUD information image, the road appears blurry, and vice versa. To tackle this problem, AHEAD applied 3D optical technology to provide information in convergence with the road for all ranges of drivers’ field of view, both near and far.

Early this year, AHEAD drew much attention by being awarded at the CES 2019 Innovation Awards. As announced at the time, AHEAD has been promoting a development project to link localization technology of NAVER LABS with advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) using data from HD maps. The result of this project was verified through an actual test drive demonstration. 

AHEAD, self-developed by the NAVER LABS Autonomous Driving Team, provides driver-assistance information, such as lane-level navigation, guidance and warning, and functions for safe driving, such as FCW and LDW, based on localization results using HD maps of roads.

Roads are very special, and at the same time, ordinary. In order to parse the nuances of such discrepancy and gain a better understanding of roads for the future of road spaces, NAVER LABS is continuing and furthering its research on a wide range of technologies.
