T3: Mapping a Lighter and Broader World

NAVER LABS unveils its new mapping device, T3. As the latest model in the T series, T3 is designed with a lighter structure that enables it to respond flexibly to a wider range of environments and purposes, making it a truly general-purpose mapping device.

The T Series and the Birth of T3

NAVER LABS has developed mapping devices in a wide variety of formats. Standing for “Transformable,” the T series is a line of these mapping devices that adapts flexibly depending on space and purpose. For example, the T2-B model was a backpack-type device capable of mapping complex terrains, while the T2-M could be combined with a mobile robot to perform autonomous mapping.

The new T3 places an even greater focus on lightweight design. Thanks to its lightweight and simple structure, it can be easily mounted and used by both humans and robots without modification. Although the device itself has become smaller, the quality of collected data has further improved.

Lighter and Simpler, Yet More Powerful

The T3 has achieved a revolutionary reduction in size and weight. Compared to the T2-B, its weight has been reduced to about one-tenth, and power consumption has been cut by more than half, allowing it to operate perfectly with a single small battery. The number of cameras has been reduced from seven to two, and LiDAR sensors from two to one, all while maintaining the same level of precision and accuracy.

Performance has also been significantly improved: the amount of data collected has more than doubled, and the enhanced image-processing algorithm has greatly improved data quality. With a single scan, the T3 can capture larger areas with higher accuracy.

Enhanced Versatility

The lightweight design of the T3 leads to greater versatility, allowing it to be used in a wide range of environments and purposes.

  • Flexible installation: Its compact and lightweight structure enables operation in various forms, from handheld use to mounting on robots, drones, or vehicles.

  • Spatial accessibility: It can perform mapping seamlessly across different environments, including stairs, roads, and indoor spaces.

  • Ease of operation: With an intuitive control system and simple setup, even non-experts can perform mapping with ease.

The T3 represents the culmination of NAVER LABS’ mapping research, a device that sheds unnecessary weight and retains only the essential technology.

Developer Commentary

“Although the weight has been reduced, the performance has actually improved, thanks to our advanced data processing technology.”

“The T3 was designed not as a professional’s tool, but as a mapping device anyone can easily use.”

“It’s not just about being lighter. It’s a technology that captures wider spaces within a smaller form—that’s what defines the T3.”
